I am so sorry I have been away! Just too many things going on and golf weather! But here is a post about my TOMS make over. If you are into shoes you can't miss the latest craze TOMS shoes. When you buy a pair they give a pair to children in third world countries. They are super comfortable and i love to knock around in them. Not alot of support so not good for long times on your feet. Ok, so now onto why I am writing about these.
When, I was working on stuff for the Scrapbook Expo booth I was surfing Pinterest and started seeing decorated TOMS. I decided I could do that. I had a pair of khaki TOMS that were not very pretty anymore.
I figured I couldn't make them any more ugly. The picture doesn't really show how dirty and nasty they are. I don't have pictures of how I make my Twitterpated ones but once my friend saw them she asked if I could do this to a pair for her mother. Her mom had stubbed up a toe.
So here goes. Now, I would have liked to take more pictures to show you how to do it but both hands always seemed to be full!
The key to makeing these is iron on adhesive.
THen stuff the shoe toe with some old rags to give some support.
THen roughly measure the section of the shoe you want to cover. I like to do the sections of the TOMS in different fabrics to go with the style of the shoe.
I just kind of rough measure and use torn edges on top so that they will look neat (?) After roughly measuring you want to iron on the adhesive to the reverse side of the fabric.
Then trim it down so that you have adhesive right to the edge. Peel of the backing slowly. Lay the fabric down where you would like it to go. It will be a little tacky so you can kind of work onto where you want.
Now, take your iron and iron onto the shoe. Use the edge of the iron to go around the edge of the fabric where it meets the sole of the shoe. After you have it all adhered trim back to the edge.
At the toe there are two little pleats. AFter a few pairs I figured out to make the pleats with the iron on adhesive and then glue down with hot glue.
This pair I just did the toes with some fun embellishments. I sewed the little buttons on.
Here is another pair I did. Before:
After:
The brads I cut off the shanks and attacked with hot glue. same with the little ribbon/brad embellishment. YOu have to make sure not to cover over the elastic band on the arch. It does leave a raw edge but looks cool.
I like to follow the panels on the TOMS shoes.
The TOMS for the booth are made with Twitterpated Fabric from our Occasions Mini. The little buttons are also from the Occasions Mini. Don't forget to order from this by the end of April! The other 2 pairs are made with the Timeless Portrait fabric from the current 2011-2012 Stampin' Up! Idea Book & Catalog.
Have fun. Don't forget to check back on April 25th for the retired accessories list.
